Run a Bath That Feels Like a Spa Treatment

Bathing is among our oldest self-care rituals; today, as stress mounts and uncertainty looms, it can feel especially comforting. For a muscle-calming bath with magnesium and medicinal herbs, you’ll need one to two cups of Vertly’s Botanical Bath Salts ($29) or Bathing Culture’s Big Dipper Mineral Bath ($30), two to four drops of GingerChi’s Penetrating Relief Oil ($12) and Lanshin’s Massager by Acera ($45). “Keeping things tidy makes me very happy,” the interior designer Beata Heuman told T last year. Her homey, open-plan office in West London, which has served as the studio and showroom for her six-person team since 2018 — is a testament to the Swedish decorator’s desire to both beautify and meticulously organize her world. Heavy antique trays neatly set with swatches of fabric, wallpaper samples and trims are lined up for clients; deep cabinet drawers are filled with files pertaining to each of the rooms under her watch at a given time. “People tend to think that interior design is just choosing the right cushions,” Heuman said. “But it’s as much about logistics as it is about creativity.” One tip she shared for keeping interiors fresh and stemming the constant tide of clutter: Maximize every inch. “People often forget about using the full height of a room,” she said. She stashes suitcases and other items that aren’t needed regularly on top of high cupboards. In her office, stock from her burgeoning line of products is stowed on elevated alcove shelving, which she reaches using her antique step ladder, and which has the added advantage of making the ceiling look even higher. Located on a secluded stretch of beachside road in Longboat Key, Fla. — a 12-mile-long barrier island between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico — the newly opened Whitney’s is the first casual restaurant contributing to the stable of Modernist architecture for which the area is becoming especially known. Reimagined by the Brooklyn-based firm Studio Tack, the former 1950s service station houses an order-at-the-counter diner and an open-air bodega overseen by the chef and Wolfgang Puck alum David Benstock. The building’s original drive-in canopy and oversize garage-style windows are now accented with booths and banquettes with shrub-patterned upholstery, a tropical mural by the mixed-media artist Ty Williams and outdoor vegetation like lush bougainvillea and towering gumbo limbo trees. On the menu are seafood dishes — from grilled fish tacos with cabbage slaw to blackened fish sandwiches topped in aioli, pickled onion and tartar sauce — and Gulf Coast-inspired snacks. The bodega is stocked with to-go provisions as well as beach-going items like umbrellas and fold-up chairs. Although the Whitney’s team hardly expected to close during their first month of being in operation, they’re offering takeout dining for now and are gearing up to celebrate their opening properly once it’s safe to gather. whitneylbk.com.

A Postcard From an Elusive Desert Landscape

Jason Fulford, a photographer and the co-publisher of J&L Books, thinks of his process as a feedback loop, one that neither began nor ended several years ago in a Los Angeles suburb, where he chanced upon a photography equipment store stocked with dusty boxes of new gear. Fulford purchased a prism filter for his faithful Hasselblad and ultimately borrowed a phrase from an old advertisement on the shop’s wall — “Picture Summer on Kodak Film” — for the title of his latest book. Its pages portray an imagined desert town (the images were taken in California, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, Nepal, Japan and Italy) full of easy yet slightly uncanny scenes: a kitchen corner stacked with clean dishes next to a bottle of Sunlight detergent, all striped by rays of actual sunlight coming through the venetian blinds; sets of stairs repeated and blurred, thanks to that prism filter; a closer-up image of a metal watch curiously worn over a wristband. The pictures are interspersed with lines from a poem co-written by the sisters Gillian and Heather Frise, its refrain “Still here / Hellooooooooo.” $45, mackbooks.co.uk. On March 23, Gov. Ralph Northam of Virginia announced that all schools would be canceled there until “at least” the end of the academic year; Kansas made that choice on March 17, and other states like New Jersey have indicated they may do the same. As parents across the country brace for having their kids underfoot for months, away from their friends and the comforting routines of school, many of our readers have asked: Should I be concerned about any potential long-term damage that a lengthy quarantine may have on my child?

First, let’s be clear — the new coronavirus pandemic is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime situation. So any existing research on children won’t capture the exact contours of this scenario. That said, we do have studies on how certain stressors like natural disasters and war can impact the long-term health of kids. The psychologist, pediatrician and child advocates I spoke to said that the research on how Hurricane Katrina and World War II affected children can be particularly instructive.

One big takeaway from that research is that the children who had “safe, stable and nurturing relationships” before those disasters had better outcomes, said Dr. Rahil Briggs, M.D., the national director of Healthy Steps, a nonprofit that supports the well-being of babies and toddlers. Therefore, she continued, it’s unlikely the vast majority of children who come from stable homes will be affected negatively by the pandemic in the long term.

“The most important thing is for children to have caring adults that they’re engaged with,” said Sherrie Westin, president of social impact and philanthropy for Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind “Sesame Street.”

Long-term studies on children in England, for instance, found that kids who were separated from their parents during World War II (to keep them safe from bombings in London) were more likely to have insecure attachment styles and lower levels of psychological well-being decades later, compared with those who stayed with their parents, even while being bombed.

What about delays in learning? That’s another big concern for parents — “we have all sorts of data about the summer slide,” Dr. Briggs said, referring to the loss of learning that children experience over the summer, but we have no idea what the effect will be on children who are out of school for much longer than three months. However, there’s not a total vacuum of learning right now for many children — schools across the country are experimenting with online education, though we don’t know how it will turn out.

The biggest concern among all the experts I spoke to is that these months out of school will exacerbate the gap between the most fortunate and the most vulnerable children — educationally, psychologically and physically. Children from financially unstable families may not have ready access to the devices they need for online learning — an estimated 300,000 children in New York City alone do not have the tablets or computers they require, Richard Carranza, New York’s schools chancellor, said in an interview with NY1.

By the fifth grade, said Betsy Zorio, vice president of U.S. programs and advocacy for the nonprofit organization Save the Children, poor children can be “up to three years behind more affluent kids because of summer learning loss.” The impact of school closures from the new coronavirus may cause that gap to widen.

In big cities, underserved children may not have access to outdoor space as playgrounds close. They might not be getting the meals, structure and warmth they usually get from their teachers, which can set them back physically and emotionally. Parental unemployment was among several factors linked to an increased risk of post-traumatic stress symptoms in children who lived through Hurricane Katrina.

Organizations like Save the Children and Sesame Workshop are mobilizing to help kids by getting meals delivered to food-insecure children and creating resources, but people who have the means should help others whenever possible, too — here’s how to do it.

Darby Saxbe, Ph.D, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Southern California, said she was particularly worried about children who might be maltreated while sheltering in place. “For high-conflict families that are prone to aggression, sheltering at home in a small family unit could be not just challenging, but dangerous,” she said. There have already been reports of a spike in child abuse cases in Fort Worth, which doctors there could not definitively link to the new coronavirus outbreak, but “it’s hard to think that it’s just coincidental,” Dr. Jamye Coffman, M.D., the medical director of the Center for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect at Cook Children’s, told an NBC DFW 5 reporter.

For those who are lucky enough to have a stable home life, this period won’t be easy — on them or on their children. Children who are prone to anxiety may find this period especially challenging. But all the experts I spoke to emphasized that routine and simple affection are important.

Even in the healthiest families, “You’re probably going to see increased tantrums, challenges with sleep or behavioral issues as folks acclimate to a new normal for a while,” said Dr. Briggs. But, we need to “trust in the foundation we’ve built with our children,” she said. “It will help us to ride this out.”
