The economics of delivery apps stinks, and it shows that many of digital habits are unsustainable.

It’s annoying that everything big companies do is shrouded in mystery and obfuscation. I’ll give you some straight talk.

Because the economics of delivering restaurant meals in the United States stinks, and the companies involved are trying to make it stink less — for them.

Even if you never order food from your sofa, the roots of this broken system should make us all worry that many of our digital habits are unsustainable mirages.

For people who use it, food delivery can be handy, or even a lifeline. And it makes financial sense in certain cities or for certain restaurants. It might be a lucrative activity in the future, or if Venus were in the fifth house, or if robots delivered dinner, or if restaurants were replaced by grain bowl factories.

But big picture, right now, in the real world of 2020 America, food delivery isn’t working out for just about everyone involved — including restaurants, delivery couriers and certainly not the app delivery companies. They are almost all losing money. Even now, yes, when many of us are ordering more takeout and delivery.

For the food delivery companies, the fastest way to fix this rotten system is to stop spending money in pointless ways and to squeeze more dollars from customers like you and me, the restaurants, the delivery couriers and anyone else involved in this chain of operation.

The way to less stinkage — for the delivery companies — is having fewer but bigger companies that have the muscle to charge more for what they do.

I can confidently predict that if and when more food delivery companies combine, they will say they’re doing so to make our gastronomic lives glorious, to generate more business for restaurants and to construct an Eiffel Tower of hot wings you can see from space. (OK, probably not the last one.)

There will be shreds of truth in those lofty ambitions. But mostly, the goal of food delivery companies is to get bigger so they have the power to charge higher prices. Or, the way to make the finances less stinky for food delivery companies is to make it stink more for the rest of us.

This is where I sigh deeply at all the activities that defy the Darwinian idea of only the fittest surviving. With Uber rides, the global buffet of Netflix, WeWork cubicles and burritos delivered to your door, we have been lured by businesses that can exist in their current form only because they have been artificially propped up with cash. Or prices have been smushed down because the cost of labor has been artificially low.

So maybe it makes sense for food delivery companies to get bigger and charge more. But once you understand that the economics are broken for lots of other kinds of habits that we’ve started to form, you have to ask where this all ends.

The internet is not a politics-free zone

We know by now that technology, like everything else, is never free from politics nor does it necessarily unite the world.

I was reminded of that on Monday when India declared a ban on a bunch of apps originating from Chinese companies, including the popular TikTok short video app, as India and China engage in deadly clashes over a border dispute.

Likewise, my colleague Javier C. Hernández has a bizarre tale of how an opera singer who resembles China’s leader, Xi Jinping, keeps getting censored online because the government scrubs the internet of anything that might provide an opportunity to mock top officials.

And Reddit, YouTube, and Twitch all suspended or banned accounts on Monday that they said broke rules against online harassment or bigoted speech. The crackdown, which included the Twitch account belonging to President Trump, mostly affected figures with right-wing political views. That prompted some hand wringing about whether the companies were legitimately enforcing policy or playing politics.

The trouble when real world divisions intrude on digital life is it grows harder for all of us to separate what’s real from what’s political hogwash.

Should Indians or Americans worry about the Chinese government spying on us through TikTok — as some politicians claim — or is that a bogus explanation for a broader feud between governments? There is a legitimate debate about how to treat speech online, but it has become clouded by concerns that political motivations are behind everything.

The more the internet morphs from a gee whiz novelty to a staple of our lives, the more we see that the digital sphere is subject to the same animosities as real life.

  • A different take on delivery apps: In New York’s Chinatown, fissures over restaurant delivery apps and e-commerce are encapsulating a broader debate about identity, my colleagues Nicole Hong and Elaine Chen report. The pandemic, they wrote, exposed a “long-simmering generational divide, between younger people who believe Chinatown must get with the times to survive, and older ones who worry about it becoming a theme park of Instagrammable desserts and $18 Asian-fusion cocktails.”
  • A different take on TikTok: OK, not EVERYTHING has to be about politics. My colleague Lena Wilson has an endearing look at young lesbians congregating on TikTok to find “friends, solidarity and even love.”
  • This might be fun! Amazon’s Prime Video started a feature to let people watch the same program with friends at the same time and gossip in a chat window about the show or movie. After one company made a web browser add-on to let people synchronize what they’re watching on Netflix, some of the U.S. streaming video companies have started to incorporate this feature, too.

On Tech: A TikTok twist on ‘PizzaGate’

Young people have tweaked the conspiracy, and today's internet sites help spread such false ideas.

One of social media’s early conspiracy theories is back, but remade in creatively horrible ways.

PizzaGate,” a baseless notion that a Washington pizza parlor was the center of a child sex abuse ring, leading to a shooting in 2016, is catching on again with younger people on TikTok and other online hangouts, my colleagues Cecilia Kang and Sheera Frenkel wrote.

I talked to Sheera about how young people have tweaked this conspiracy and how internet sites help spread false ideas. (And, yes, our names are pronounced the same but spelled differently.)

Shira: How has this false conspiracy changed in four years?

Sheera: Younger people on TikTok have made PizzaGate more relatable for them. So a conspiracy that centered on Hillary Clinton and other politicians a few years ago now instead ropes in celebrities like Justin Bieber. Everyone is at home, bored and online more than usual. When I talked to teens who were spreading these conspiracy videos, many of them said it seemed like fun.

If it’s for “fun,” is this version of the PizzaGate conspiracy harmless?

It’s not. We’ve seen over and over that some people can get so far into conspiracies that they take them seriously and commit real-world harm. And for people who are survivors of sexual abuse, it can be painful to see people talking about it all over social media.

Have the internet companies gotten better at stopping false conspiracies like this?

They have, but people who want to spread conspiracies are figuring out workarounds. Facebook banned the PizzaGate hashtag, for example, but the hashtag is not banned on Instagram, even though it’s owned by Facebook. People also migrated to private groups where Facebook has less visibility into what’s going on.

Tech companies’ automated recommendation systems also can suck people further into false ideas. I recently tried to join Facebook QAnon conspiracy groups, and Facebook immediately recommended I join PizzaGate groups, too. On TikTok, what you see is largely decided by computer recommendations. So I watched one video about PizzaGate, and the next videos I saw in the app were all about PizzaGate.

TikTok is a relatively new place where conspiracies can spread. What is it doing to address this?

TikTok is not proactively going out and looking for videos with potentially false and dangerous ideas and removing them. There were more than 80 million views of TikTok videos with PizzaGate-related hashtags.

The New York Times reached out to TikTok about the videos, pointing out their spike. After we sent our email, TikTok removed many of the videos and seemed to limit their spread. Facebook and Twitter often do this, too — they frequently remove content only after journalists reach out and point it out.

Do you worry that writing about baseless conspiracies gives them more oxygen?

We worry about that all the time, and spend as much time debating whether to write about false conspiracies and misinformation as we do writing about them.

We watch for ones that reach a critical mass; we don’t want to be the place where people first find out about conspiracies. When a major news organization writes about a conspiracy — even to debunk it — people who want to believe it will twist it to appear to validate their views.

But to ignore them completely could also be dangerous.

Tip of the Week

Use a Password Manager. Just Do It.

Brian X. Chen, a consumer technology writer at The Times, has annoying but necessary medicine to better protect ourselves online.

Everybody needs to use a password manager, a piece of software that helps you come up with complex passwords for all of your internet accounts and secures them in a digital vault.

I’m not exaggerating. I mean everyone — from our grandparents to the most tech savvy gearheads.

You know that you shouldn’t reuse the same password across multiple accounts. If you do and just one company gets hacked, all of your other accounts are also vulnerable.

But let’s be real: Everybody reuses passwords, or just changes a number or two at the end. An On Tech reader, Rob Brennan in Montreal, recently wrote in asking for help because he’s now visiting more and more sites that require passwords. Another reader said that he creates complex passwords and then has a hard time remembering them. Yes, of course.

It’s not your fault. Blame the tech companies and the digital security community for not coming up with something better than the antiquated, hopelessly broken password as a way to prove who we are online.

Until there’s a better way, the best thing you can do is download a password management app like 1Password or LastPass onto your mobile devices and computer. (People who have Apple phones and computers also have the option of iCloud Keychain. It works only on Apple devices, but it’s better than nothing.)

These password management apps simplify the process by generating a complex, unique password for you and saving your login details. To unlock your vault of passwords, you just need to enter one master password. Even better, you can set up the password management app to quickly unlock your vault with biometrics like the iPhone’s face scanner or the fingerprint scanner on Android phones.

To guide you through this process, both The Times’s product recommendation site Wirecutter and I have written articles on getting started with password management apps. I’m warning you: This is a huge chore. For those of us with dozens of internet accounts, you will have to log in to every one of them and manually change each password.

These password management apps, however, simplify that process by generating a complex, unique password for you and saving your login details.

Just take on this task once, and your digital life will be much safer for years to come.

  • Resist overly simplistic utopian or dystopian explanations: My colleague John Herrman digs into research on young people’s use of TikTok for political expression and activism. They’re neither all geniuses who cracked new kinds of political activism online, nor all cynics who are drowning in PizzaGate misinformation. People are complicated! (Charlie Warzel, a Times Opinion writer, had a similar take recently.)
  • Maybe this time is different? (Or not.) The Times tech reporter David Streitfeld has a historical reality check to predictions that the pandemic will permanently result in more remote office work. “The history of telecommuting has been strewn with failure,” David writes. One challenge is that remote work should be paired with fundamental changes in work culture, but it usually isn’t.
  • Tracing the history of Facebook’s relationship with President Trump: The Washington Post has a worthy read of Facebook executives’ struggles with handling political figures, including Mr. Trump, who say inflammatory things online. The Post suggested that Facebook employees recommended ways for the president to revise one of his recent provocative posts so that it pushed right up to the edge of Facebook’s rules without breaking them.
