Showering Before Noon Counts as a Win

Tiny victories for grown ups.
A roundup of new guidance and stories from NYT Parenting.

This week, we rounded up some of our readers’ most brilliant Tiny Victories, which are little parenting wins like this one from Jen Bienvenu in Little Rock, Ark.: “We’ve started playing ‘hairdresser’ in the morning. My 4-year-old gently brushes my hair for 30 minutes while I enjoy a cup of coffee.”

But at this point in the pandemic, I’m recommending we start cataloging Tiny Victories for ourselves. I did not leave the house for 72 hours this week, and when I finally did go outside for a run yesterday morning, I felt like a hero. I don’t mean to brag, but I have also been showering before noon every day. Susan Dominus, a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine, discovered a genre of video she calls “good-vibe” TikToks, which she hopes will get her through the looming quarantined winter with her 14-year-old twin boys. I’d classify that as an adult Tiny Victory for sure.

Also new this week: Christina Caron talks to families about how they’re re-mixing family traditions to keep everyone healthy during the holidays. Jenny Marder looks into whether it’s safe for kids to play indoor sports this winter. Ariella Cook-Shonkoff explains how parents can tame the stressors related to climate change. Patricia Cohen has a piece about how this is the first recession where the economy is deeply intertwined with the failed network of child care in the U.S.

Finally, are you a medical professional who has been treating patients with coronavirus? I want to interview you for a future newsletter about your experiences parenting and working during this difficult year. If you’re interested, drop me a line here.

Thanks for reading.

Tiny Victories

Parenting can be a grind. Let’s celebrate the tiny victories.

We sometimes play “animals,” and my kids get to hop, run, and bark to get some sillies out. I always have to play too, and I alternate between being a worm or a beetle … you know, something that just lies on the floor. Best game ever.— Britt Nagy, New Lenox, IL
