Good Thursday morning. Here are some of the stories making news in Washington and politics today.

• Democratic candidates promised unprecedented new action on climate change in the first prime-time televised forum devoted to the issue in a presidential campaign. They vowed to undo the Trump administration’s environmental policies and spend trillions of dollars to promote renewable energy. Here’s more on the plans and here are five takeaways from the town halls.

• Among the plans, it is clear thataverting catastrophe is only one selling point. The Democratic candidates broadly claimed that cutting greenhouse gases will also lead to an economic bonanza.

• Some of the Democrats who didn’t make this month’s debate stage are becoming familiar with sparse crowds and daily indignities, but still they soldier on.

• Gregory B. Craig, a White House counsel during the Obama administration, was acquitted of lying to investigators. His trial painted an unflattering portrait of Washington lobbying and was a blow to the Justice Department’s effort to more aggressively crack down on foreign influence in Washington.

• President Trump heads into the closing months of the year before he faces re-election without a clear policy agenda and an uphill path to notching major new accomplishments before he faces voters in 2020.

• The Trump administration on Wednesday imposed sanctions on an elaborate shipping network that Iran uses to illicitly sell oil, and unveiled a $15 million reward to anyone with information that disrupts the scheme.

• The Pentagon will divert funds from military construction projects in nearly half the 50 states, three territories and in 19 countries to the southwestern border wall as part of Mr. Trump’s efforts to redirect spending to his signature campaign promise.

• Mr. Trump insists he was right about Hurricane Dorian heading for Alabama. So much so, the president on Wednesday displayed a map of the hurricane’s path that appeared to have been drawn to show that.

• As fears about mass shootings rise, school preparedness programs include some “completely stupid” scare tactics that are actually frightening students even more, child trauma experts say.
