Good Thursday morning. Here are some of the stories making news in Washington and politics: A historic day of constitutional consequence, and a Democratic presidential debate tonight.

The House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to impeach President Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He is only the third president in history to be impeached and face removal by the Senate.

Backing the impeachment of Mr. Trump is a politically risky step for many Democrats, more so given that Republicans have made clear the effort will die in the Senate. Speaker Nancy Pelosi indicated that the House could indefinitely delay sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate, a strategy that suggested she was keeping the charges as leverage in a coming negotiation over the terms of a Senate trial.

Mr. Trump’s impeachment on Wednesday was not just about his pressure campaign on Ukraine to benefit his domestic political standing. Impeachments come at times of tumult when pent-up pressures seem to explode into conflict.

Moments after the House passed two articles of impeachment against him, Mr. Trump lashed out at his Democratic accusers in a rambling two-hour speech at a campaign rally in Michigan. He claimed he was enjoying himself.

In the changing suburbs of Bucks County in Pennsylvania, where traditional party allegiances are scrambled, voters viewed impeachment through the prism of Mr. Trump.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg didn’t cement his place in the top tier of the Democratic primary until he became more aggressive in his campaigning and against other candidates. Former Vice President Joe Biden has taken to narrating the presidential race with an unusual level of detail, assessing not only his standing in the primary race but also how he would fare in the general election in specific states around the country. Basically, he’s starting to sound like a pundit.

A new group founded by three former Fox News employees sent a letter to all presidential campaigns on Wednesday asking them to publicly condemn nondisclosure agreements that deal with workplace environment issues.

The Supreme Court said on Wednesday that it would decide how broadly federal employment discrimination laws apply to schools run by churches. The justices will attempt to balance two competing interests: avoiding interference in the affairs of religious groups and protecting their employees from discrimination.

The Trump administration moved on Wednesday to bar immigrants convicted of minor crimes in the United States from obtaining asylum, the latest effort to limit protections extended to those fleeing persecution.
