I Am Going to Physically Explode

In September, Minna Dubin wrote an essay for us about a phenomenon she called “mom rage” — the anger and frustration many mothers feel, and that they shove down beneath the surface because “mothers are supposed to be martyr-like in our patience.” She returned to the subject this week, interviewing other moms who are experiencing “unrestrained anger” during the pandemic, when we are being asked to do it all, and be it all.

As Virginia Duan, a mother of four in the Bay Area told Minna: “It feels as if I am going to physically explode, like having an out-of-body experience where I cannot seem to control the litany of invectives flying from my mouth.”

Also this week, Nefertiti Austin, the author of the memoir “Motherhood So White: A Memoir of Race, Gender, and Parenting,” has a piece about why Black families often opt for informal adoptions by relatives, neighbors or close family friends. “The preservation of family is paramount to us, which is why when a relationship breaks down, our go-to is a known entity,” Nefertiti wrote.

Christina Caron, our NYT Parenting staff reporter, examines why we don’t know more about pregnant women with Covid-19; Neha Chaudhary, M.D., a child psychiatrist, explains how the calming rituals of athletes can be helpful for parents, too; Brendan Borrell talks to parents of children with rare genetic diseases about how they are navigating a path of unknowns; Virginia Sole-Smith considers how summer meal programs meant to feed hungry children are struggling with pandemic-related fallout; and finally, Alyssa Shelasky asks the burning question: “Is Sex Dead for Parents?
