Holiday Magic Doesn’t Come Cheap

Plus: How to deal with severe toddler tantrums and screen zombies.
A roundup of new guidance and stories from NYT Parenting.

At this time of year, Sa’iyda Shabazz wrote, “there is an undercurrent of dread running just beneath my Christmas cheer,” because she worries about providing a magical holiday for her son when money is tight. Sa’iyda spoke to experts and other parents who struggle with money about how to temper kids’ expectations, let go of guilt and create a special day on a budget.

For those who are traveling during the holidays, Katherine Rosman gave us a list of audiobooks for road trips with kids. And if you find yourself handing over the iPad more often than usual, Christina Caron has tips to dial back screen use. Also new this week, Julia Calderone reported on fertility advances we made in the 2010s and we published a guide to diagnosing and treating severe tantrums by Paul Underwood.

Tiny Victories

Parenting can be a grind. Let’s celebrate the tiny victories.
I figured out how to get my competitive 4-year-old to help with the laundry by turning it into a game. We compete against one another and for each article of our own clothing we pull out of the pile and turn inside out, we score a “point.” — Jennifer Butterfoss, San Francisco
