We live with an unspoken assumption that the planet is survivable, but the Paradise fire showed that nature is surpassing our capacity to prepare for — or even conceive of — the magnitude of disaster that a disordered earth can produce.

For eight hours last fall, Paradise, Calif., became a zone at the limits of the American imagination — and a preview of the American future.
